Kotlin for Beginners

“A modern programming language that makes developers happier, more productive, and safer.” — Inspired by JetBrains philosophy.

Welcome to the definitive Kotlin for Beginners course. Whether you come from Java, Python, or JavaScript, or you’re seeking to master the leading language of modern development across the JVM, Android, backend, and multiplatform, this course is engineered to guide you from foundational mechanics to advanced architecture patterns.

Kotlin was designed by engineers at JetBrains to solve everyday developer friction: eradicating boilerplate code, eliminating runtime null pointer exceptions, and ensuring seamless interoperability with the Java ecosystem.

⚡ Concise and Productive

Write up to 40% less code. Say goodbye to ceremonial getters, setters, and verbose constructors with data classes, type inference, and extension functions.

🛡️ Safe by Default (Null Safety)

Kotlin’s type system cleanly separates nullable and non-nullable references, eliminating NullPointerException at compile time.

🔄 100% Interoperable with Java

Call any Java library or framework from Kotlin and vice versa without wrappers or performance penalties.

🚀 Concurrency with Coroutines

Handle asynchronous operations and non-blocking programming sequentially, readably, and with ultra-efficient memory usage.

Notice how Kotlin blends declarative simplicity with safety in just a few lines:

// 1. Immutable modeling with default arguments in a single line
data class Message(val author: String, val text: String, val isAi: Boolean = false)
fun main() {
// 2. Read-only collections with smart type inference
val history = listOf(
Message(author = "Student", text = "Why is Kotlin so popular?"),
Message(author = "AI Assistant", text = "Because it is safe, expressive, and fun!", isAi = true)
)
// 3. Fluid functional processing and Template Strings
history
.filter { it.isAi }
.forEach { println("🤖 [${it.author}]: ${it.text}") }
}

The curriculum is structured into 4 learning modules comprising 16 practical lessons:

Module 1: Basics and Advanced Control Flow

Section titled “Module 1: Basics and Advanced Control Flow”

Understand how code executes on the JVM and master your application flow.

  1. L1: Agnostic Environment and Hello World Available
    The JVM, Bytecode, kotlinc compiler, Gradle, and initial welcome banner.
  2. L2: Variables, Types, and Null Safety Available
    val/var mutability, the billion-dollar mistake, Platform Types, and safe input validation.
  3. L3: Hierarchies and Exhaustive Control Flow Available
    if/when expressions, enum, sealed classes/interfaces, and the main menu loop.
  4. L4: Anatomy of Functions Available
    Named arguments, default parameters, single-expression functions, and modular refactoring.

Learn declarative paradigms and build fluent interfaces.

  1. L5: Extension and Infix Functions WIP
    Extension functions, extension properties, infix notation, and terminal ANSI styling.
  2. L6: Higher-Order Functions and Lambdas WIP
    Function types, trailing lambdas, inline functions, and message sanitization pipelines.
  3. L7: Collections and Sequences (Lazy vs Eager) WIP
    List/Set/Map, functional transforms (map, filter), lazy evaluation with Sequence, and history.
  4. L8: Scope Functions WIP
    let, run, with, apply, and also: the Swiss Army knife to instantiate and mutate user state.

Module 3: Advanced OOP and Typing (The Clash with Java)

Section titled “Module 3: Advanced OOP and Typing (The Clash with Java)”

Architect robust, decoupled, and strongly typed systems.

  1. L9: Classes, Inheritance, and Visibility WIP
    Constructors, visibility modifiers, open vs default final classes, and ChatEngine encapsulation.
  2. L10: Companion Objects and Object Declarations WIP
    Thread-safe singletons, companion object, data object, and event modeling.
  3. L11: Advanced Generics and Variance WIP
    Declaration-site variance (in/out), reified type parameters, and Result<T> wrapper.
  4. L12: Delegation and Delegated Properties WIP
    Native delegation with by, lazy, observable, and automated disk persistence.

Master modern concurrency and distribute your application.

  1. L13: Coroutines vs Traditional Asynchrony WIP
    JVM threads vs lightweight Coroutines, non-blocking suspension, and I/O benchmarks.
  2. L14: Suspension and Concurrency Scopes WIP
    suspend functions, CoroutineScope, launch/async, and concurrent “AI typing…” animation.
  3. L15: Contexts and Dispatchers WIP
    Dispatchers.IO vs Default, withContext, and safe concurrent API integrations.
  4. L16: Final Project: Packaging and Distribution WIP
    Full architectural review, JVM Shutdown Hooks, Gradle Fat JAR, and cross-platform binary distribution.

💻 100% Live Online

Interactive live classes with immediate feedback, real-time code debugging, and hands-on drills.

💳 Flexible Pay-Per-Session

$40 USD per class. Pay session-by-session without lock-in so you advance at your own pace.

🛠️ Guided Hands-On Lab

Step-by-step development of the AI Chat CLI with code reviews and professional engineering standards.

Certificate of Completion and Graduation Criteria

Section titled “Certificate of Completion and Graduation Criteria”

Upon completing the curriculum, students can earn an Official Certificate of Completion backed by the Desde0 ecosystem. To maintain high engineering standards, certification requires:

📜 Competency Certification

No certificates for mere attendance. The certificate validates that you master Kotlin syntax, concurrency, and architecture on the JVM.

💻 100% Lab Completed

You must build and verify all incremental stages of the AI Chat CLI project in your personal GitHub repository.

🎙️ Live Technical Defense

A 1-on-1 live code review session where you explain the architecture, design patterns, and engineering tradeoffs of your code.

💳 Full Program Coverage

Completion of the full curriculum investment (16 lessons × $40 USD = $640 USD), covered per session or in a single payment.
